OpenQuill Privacy Policy
This policy covers the OpenQuill app for iPad, iPhone and Mac, this website at openquill.jondevs.com, and the optional Claude connector. OpenQuill is made by Fighting Smart - Cyber LLC ("we", "us").
In short: OpenQuill is a notes app for handwriting, typing and PDFs. Your notes stay on your device, or in your own iCloud if you keep your library there. AI features run on your device by default. If you add your own key for an AI provider, the app talks to that provider directly; those requests don't pass through us. If you connect Claude to OpenQuill, our server passes messages between Claude and your app without storing your notebook content. There are no ads, no analytics and no tracking, and you don't need an account to use the app.
What stays on your devices
- Your notebooks: handwriting, typed text, PDFs, images and everything else you put in them, plus your settings. They're stored on your device, in the app's own storage or in the folder you choose.
- AI provider keys you add: stored in your device's Keychain and kept on that device only. You can choose to sync a key through iCloud Keychain.
We have no copy of your notebooks and can't read them.
iCloud
If you keep your OpenQuill library in iCloud Drive, Apple stores and syncs those files between your devices under Apple's privacy policy. We don't have access to your iCloud account or files.
AI features
- On your device, by default. Built-in AI features use Apple's on-device models where your device supports them. What you ask, and the notes involved, stay on your device.
- With your own key. If you add an API key for a provider such as Anthropic, the app sends your request, and the parts of your notes that the request needs, straight from your device to that provider. These requests don't go through our servers, and we don't see them. The app asks for your permission before it first sends anything to each provider. The provider's own terms and privacy policy apply to what you send it.
The Claude connector
The connector is optional. If you connect Claude to OpenQuill, Claude reaches your notebooks through our server at openquill.jondevs.com/mcp:
- What travels through it: while OpenQuill is open on your device, the server passes each request from Claude to the app, and the app's answer back to Claude. Answers can include content from the notebooks you allowed. That content passes through the server in memory over encrypted connections and isn't stored.
- What Claude can do: you choose which notebooks Claude can reach and what it may do there, such as read, suggest changes or edit. Its changes arrive as suggestions that you accept or reject, unless you allow direct edits in a notebook.
- What the server stores: a record of each connection, so it keeps working: which agent you connected, what you allowed, when the connection expires, and the tokens that authorize it. We don't store your notes, pages or the content of requests.
- Anthropic: what you share with Claude is handled under Anthropic's terms and privacy policy.
This website
openquill.jondevs.com sets no cookies, runs no scripts, and loads nothing from other websites. Cloudflare, which hosts it, processes your IP address and the details of each request in order to deliver pages and protect the site from abuse. We have turned off request logging for our service.
Crash reports and beta feedback
OpenQuill has no analytics or crash-reporting code of its own.
- App Store: if you turn on sharing with app developers in your device's Analytics & Improvements settings, Apple sends us crash reports and diagnostics. Apple's privacy policy applies.
- TestFlight: if you test a beta, Apple shares information with us as TestFlight describes, such as the email address you were invited with, installs, crash reports, and any feedback and screenshots you choose to send.
Permissions
If the app asks for access to something on your device, such as your photos or camera, it uses that access only for the feature you started, on your device.
Service providers
- Apple: App Store, TestFlight, iCloud and crash reports.
- Cloudflare: hosting this website, relaying the Claude connector, and forwarding email sent to our support address.
- Google: the mailbox where we read support email.
AI providers you add your own key for work for you, not for us. We don't sell personal information, show ads, use analytics tools, or track you across apps and websites.
Keeping and deleting your data
- Notes: delete them in the app, or delete the app. Copies in iCloud Drive are removed through iCloud.
- AI keys: remove a key in the app's settings. Keychain items can remain after you delete the app, so remove keys in the app first if you want them gone.
- Claude connector: disconnect in OpenQuill or in Claude. We delete the connection record when you disconnect or when it expires.
- Support email: we keep your messages only as long as we need them to help you. Ask us and we'll delete them.
Children
OpenQuill is not directed to children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their information.
Security
Every connection between the app, the website, the connector and AI providers is encrypted in transit. API keys are kept in the Keychain. Content passing through the Claude connector is decrypted on our server while it's relayed, because each encrypted connection ends there; it's never written to storage.
Changes to this policy
We'll update the date above when this policy changes, and describe significant changes in the app's release notes.
